Tehran Says Ready to Boost Trade with Bern
February 5, 2014TEHRAN – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad met his Swiss counterpart Hans-Rudolf Merz in Geneva on Sunday to discuss “questions related to collaboration in the energy and economic sectors”, the Swiss government said in a statement.
In March 2008, Switzerland’s Elektrizitaetsgesellschaft Laufenburg (EGL) signed a 25-year deal with the National Iranian Gas Export Company for the delivery of 5.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year.
The deal came despite U.S. pressure on European countries to cut their business ties with Tehran as a means to pressure it to give up its right to nuclear enrichment.
Switzerland has been representing U.S. interests in Iran since 1980, because Washington has no direct diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic
